Oh, My GOSH! She's BROWN??!!!

Princess loves playing with the webcam on her laptop to pretend she's the host of her own talk show.  She was giving her "fans" a tour of her room over the weekend.  She saw Hubster and I walk by behind her on the screen.

I heard her say, "So that was my Mom and Dad.  You might be wondering why they're white and I'm brown.  We'll, long story short..."

And then she stopped because she noticed me hovering.

Darn it!

I encouraged her to finish, but it was a no go.  So I got silly with it.  I said, "What do you mean we're white and you're brown?  I'm brown, too!!!  Look at all of these brown spots I have all over me!" and pointed out my millions of freckles.

She said, "And you're giving them to me!  I'm growing freckles just like you!"

She has some freckles across her nose and cheeks.  I decided to celebrate that we now have freckles in common because she's so excited to share this feature with me instead of get stuck in mommy guilt that they are only there because I haven't done a great job making her apply sunscreen since she moved to FL to be my baby almost three years ago.

I'm still hoping she finishes her explanation of why we have different skin tones one day.  She's open about being adopted now, but I'm still curious what her version of "long story short" sounds like.

  1. That's agreat thing you achieved. She went from not wanting her dad and you at school, so that children would ask no questions why she is darker than both of you to being open about adoption, to speaking about it quite naturally on her phantasy tv show.

    That's just great!

I think it is because you are ready to see problems and to tackle them, rather than sweeping them under the carpet or establishing an omerta about them. I am so happy princess has contact with her sister and that you encourage it, while being watchful about her reactions, so that she does not suffer!

  2. It sounds as though she's really close to saying it. I'm so thrilled to hear that you're all encouraging her to be okay with adoption.

I just wanted to say hello. I'm one of your newest followers. I come from www.aliciamarie911.blogspot.com and my husband and I are newbies to this whole foster care thing. We're still in the classes to become licensed. I'd love for any advice, encouragement, or for-warnings that you could offer me.
